The role
We are recruiting a Senior Cloud Engineer to take a leading role in driving the implementation, automation, and operation of our evolving AWS-based Internal Developer Platform. This platform is foundational to the global services consumed by Flutter's well-known betting brands, enabling faster delivery, improved reliability, and enhanced developer experience across the group.
In this senior capacity, you won't just engineer; you will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the technological trajectory for Flutter’s cloud infrastructure. You will collaborate with brands across the group to migrate and modernise their services, deliver cutting-edge platform capabilities, set technical standards, and promote knowledge-sharing and best practices across the engineering community. Your experience will be crucial in the evaluation, selection and implementation of AWS services, platform tooling (including IaC, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and observability), and the variety of components required to achieve our group strategic objectives.
Drawing on experience from enterprise-scale cloud transformations, your deep technical expertise, passion for cloud, and collaborative approach provide confidence and articulate business value. You're will offer technical leadership (potentially shaping our API strategy), mentor others, contribute strategically, and navigate complex interdependencies.
- What You’ll Be Doing
- Build and operate a secure, performant, and cost-effective AWS Cloud Platform.
- Own and evolve our Kubernetes platform, ensuring its scalability, security, and operational excellence.
- Spearhead the automation strategy using advanced Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies (Crossplane, Terraform, CDK) and configuration management tooling, driving towards a self-service developer experience.
- Own and enforce best practices for source code management (Git/GitHub) and artifact repositories (e.g., container registries, Helm repositories), ensuring security and consistency.
- Drive technical design reviews, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and setting high standards for code quality. Enable and support engineering teams with the adoption of cloud services.
- Mentor and coach junior engineers within the team, fostering their technical growth, reviewing their work, and ensuring their success.
- Actively contribute to the platform’s technical roadmap and strategy, collaborating with architects, product managers, and leadership to define future direction.
- Lead the troubleshooting of complex incidents, problems, and risks impacting the platforms services, driving sustainable incident response and blameless post-mortems.
- Author, oversee, and ensure the quality of technical documentation, LLDs, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
- Lead the evaluation and integration of new tools and technologies (e.g., within the Kubernetes, GitOps, CI/CD, and observability ecosystems).
- Ensure the platform meets stringent security and compliance requirements, embedding security throughout the design and operational lifecycle.
- Liaise with Third Party vendors and partners.
- On-call is likely to be introduced in the future.
- We'd Like You To Master In
- Significant, demonstrable experience building, operating, and scaling cloud platforms within highly available AWS environments.
- Expertise in Kubernetes (EKS preferred) architecture, operations, and ecosystem tooling.
- Advanced proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Crossplane, Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation) at scale.
- Proven experience implementing and managing GitOps workflows and tooling (e.g., ArgoCD).
- Strong, practical experience designing and managing complex CI/CD pipelines (e.g., AWS CodePipeline, Argo Workflows, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
- Strong programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, Go, Bash) applied to automation, platform development, and tooling.
