Job Opportunity - Computational / Data ScientistThe GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GIMM is the result of the merge of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and dedicates to unraveling the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research.
GIMM opens a call to hire a Computational / Data Scientist with PhD correspondent to the initial level under the terms of the applicable regulation, under an Unfixed-Term Employment Contract within the project IMM-Care- Boosting Clinical Research for the Benefit of Society" – HORIZON-WIDERA-2022- ACCESS-01-01-two-stage, funded by European Commission and co-funded by the Portuguese government. The Researcher will join our recently established Microbiome in Health and Disease Translational Laboratory coordinated by Ana Santos Almeida at GIMM-CARE.
Work Plan Activities: We are looking for a highly motivated computational or data scientist to join our team and lead a large-scale longitudinal study aimed at identifying and validating microbiome biomarkers for early diagnosis and outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC). As part of this project, you will be responsible for developing a microbiome-based artificial intelligence platform for diagnosis and response to cancer therapy. This will involve integrating microbiome data with clinical and lifestyle – diet, stress, sleep and physical exercise – information. To be successful in this role, you should have experience with microbiome metagenomics and metabolomics pipelines and analysis, as well as data integration from clinical data, lifestyle factors, and blood genomic biomarkers. You will need to be comfortable working with large datasets, complex database integration, as well as be proficient in statistical analysis. In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will also be expected to actively contribute to the intellectual environment of the lab and the institute. This includes preparing and presenting scientific progress in seminars, conferences, and peer-reviewed publications. Profile of Candidate: Any National, foreign and stateless candidate(s) who hold the following requirements can apply:
PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, microbiology, or related disciplines;Significant experience in the analysis of omics data, including metagenomics and metabolomics, in academia or industry;Proven training in big data or health data analysis;Solid knowledge of the human microbiome and bacterial genetics/genomics is preferred;Strong proficiency in R, Python, SQL and Unix command-line interfaces;Prior experience in machine learning and deep learning models is desirable, as is experience with workflow managers such as Snakemake;Strong writing and oral communication skills in English;Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.Application process: The call is open from 2 nd of April until 16 th of May 2025 (30 working days), and the application documents (indicated below) should be submitted, in PDF format, to People & Culture Team through the email ****** , by identifying the reference of the position in the "Subject":
